Stabat Mater in Mundo
“There stood a mother in the world, her eyes full of disbelief”
These are the opening words of the piece Stabat Mater in Mundo (text: Bas Van Damme, music: Andy Janssen).
Inspired by the well-known Stabat Mater text, the “standing mother” looks upon the modern world and its crises, advocating for maternal love as a counterpoint to the pursuit of power, destruction, and emotional brutality.
Above all, she appeals - metaphorically speaking - to her child to remember these early, positive influences and to pass them on to future generations.

In this special concert program, the modern composition is presented alongside G. B. Pergolesi’s well-known Stabat Mater setting. Both works utilize the same instrumentation, creating an exchange between old and new. Baroque conventions inform the new composition, while at the same time, historical music is interpreted in a fresh way and kept alive.

Stabat Mater in Mundo stands for beauty and hope in times of increasing uncertainty and disillusionment, for an interplay of tradition and innovation, and for an intercultural dialogue. Young, international soloists from Aachen and Leuven are performing in Hamburg.
